hybrid power 816 HP. Performance and luxury

There are fewer and fewer cars on the market that arouse the emotions of automotive enthusiasts and do not cost a million euros. The once popular hot hatches are in short supply, and the relatively cheap, high-performance coupe is a dying breed. It's good, however, that there are still cars like the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E-Performance: with a powerful V8 under the hood. Moreover, it is a model suited to our times, i.e. hybrid. However, electrification in this case does not only serve to reduce emissions. First of all, it improves performance. And how!

Well, a hybrid with a large battery cannot be light, even if it uses modern materials. The hybrid AMG GT 63 S weighs over two tons, but it's not a big deal. Why? The V8 engine operating under a light cover has 612 HP. But that's not all. It is supported by an electric motor, which provides another 204 horses. Care was taken to distribute the weight appropriately. While the V8 adds considerable weight to the front, at the rear we have a hybrid module with an electric motor and, of course, a battery. In total, we have a cosmic 816 HP and even more impressive torque, which can reach up to 1,420 Nm. Like a proper tractor unit.

Consequently, this particular version of the AMG GT accelerates to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, which is faster than many supercars for much more money. Moreover, this car is really “eco” because it can travel over 10 km without turning on the combustion engine. However, the most thrilling experience comes from using both types of drive at the same time. Pressing the gas pedal to the floor causes the body to be pressed into the seat with incredible force. I also appreciate the well-fitting headrests – without them, acceleration would lead to whiplash. Especially since this version of the AMG GT increases speed, taking off from traffic lights and accelerating on the highway with equal ease.

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E-Performance – surgical precision

The drive power is therefore more than satisfactory, but it needs to be tamed with quality. Driver skills are one thing (AMG GT is not a car for beginners), but technology is equally important. Here we have the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which as standard transmits almost all the torque to the rear wheels, but when there is a risk of skidding, some of it is transferred to the front to stabilize the driving track. Of course, you can thank electronics for their support. Available include: a mode that allows you to drift effectively. With this torque, breaking traction is not even particularly difficult, despite the use of very wide tires at the rear.

The system ensuring predictable drive behavior is complemented by the AMG Ride Control+ active suspension and rear steering axle. As a result, a car weighing well over two tons drives as if it weighed much less and was a neat, not too large coupe. Such as the Porsche Cayman. Only with much more power. This can be felt on a winding road with smooth asphalt (e.g. on a race track). The car takes turns with surgical precision, immediately reacting to small movements of the steering wheel and changes in pressure on the gas pedal. Driving the AMG GT can be addictive.

But at the same time, the AMG GT 63 S E-Performance offers Comfort mode. Then we maintain performance, but the suspension softens and the steering may even make us lazy. As a result, the AMG GT is not a comfortable S-class limousine, but it provides the minimum comfort needed for everyday driving. Even the cabin gets quieter! Thanks to this, the AMG GT is not a tiring, loud and hard supercar like a wagon without springs. You can happily go on a long route with it.

AMG GT 63 S E-Performance – a herd of horses in an elegant suit

Apart from everything, the AMG GT also impresses with its appearance. Of course, it has a slim coupe silhouette with a very long engine cover, and there are also other attributes such as muscular fenders and a wide, distinctive grill. The roofline slopes slightly towards the rear, hiding a not very large trunk under the rear window. The whole thing looks very elegant. This is not the brutal, uncompromising style of the Porsche 911. Mercedes focuses on the balance between luxury and sporty aggression.

It is similar in the cabin, where Mercedes combines modern technology with luxury. The cockpit is dominated by a large touch screen, which is the interface between the user and the latest version of the MBUX system. The graphics are elegant and the functionality of the system is unquestionable. However, there are a lot of options, so it may take some time to understand them. However, access to the most important ones is provided by buttons and knobs on the sports steering wheel: they can be used to quickly change driving modes and adjust the parameters of the hybrid drive (e.g. the level of energy recuperation).

The materials used by Mercedes in the cabin are leather, carbon fiber and aluminum. Everything carefully assembled and matched. I have no objections. The seats – as befits a car with such performance – are bucket-shaped and perfectly shaped. Moreover, they have massage, ventilation and heating functions. This is rare in supercars. In the back, this is also a feature of cars in this category, but there is no room. There is a symbolic bench there, but I wouldn't wish anyone to have to sit there and ride more than a few kilometers. This is a place for a carry-on bag, not for passengers.

AMG GT 63 S E-Performance – is it worth buying?

Of course! As long as someone has enough money or is able to finance a very expensive lease. The price of the AMG GT 63 S E-Performance starts at PLN 1.15 million, but adding a few paid add-ons can increase the price to over one and a half million. Tby a lot, but we must take into account that in return we get a car with the performance typical of cars costing over a million euros, not PLN. And the competition? It's not too big. These could be the top variants of the Porsche 911, but it could also be the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid – but it's a limousine. For me, it's good that Mercedes – under the AMG brand – shows that the future of the automotive industry is not only downsizing engines, fuel-efficient hybrids and functional “electrics”. It's also emotions.
