In autumn, strawberries begin an important period – preparation for wintering. At this time, the bushes no longer waste energy on berries, but direct all their energy to strengthening the roots and laying future buds. In order for the plants to wake up faster in the spring and not get sick, in October they carry out a special watering with an infusion, which helps them survive the winter without loss.
To prepare the solution, dissolve a glass of wood ash in a bucket of warm water and add a teaspoon of iodine. Ash saturates the soil with potassium and phosphorus, strengthens plant tissue and makes the soil a little more alkaline. Iodine serves as a mild protection against fungi and rot, which are especially active in wet autumn weather. The mixture is thoroughly mixed and a liter is poured under each bush – directly on the damp soil, after light loosening.
In just a few days, the leaves become denser and richer, the roots become stronger and can more easily withstand the first frosts. In the spring, such bushes quickly begin to grow, produce strong greenery and flower stalks, are less likely to get sick and delight with large, sweet berries.
