OECD study: 81% of teachers in Romania are satisfied with the employment conditions. Spectacular increase in satisfaction to payroll

A percentage of 81 of the Romanian teachers who participated in the international study on the teaching-learning process 2024 declared themselves satisfied with their employment conditions, except for salaries, which represents more than the OECD average: 68%, the Talis International Report shows, informs News.ro. Thus, the level of satisfaction of the teachers regarding the employment conditions (except for salaries) has increased by 7 percentage points from 2018 to the present. At the same time, 57% are satisfied with salaries (above the OECD average: 39%), an increase of 34 percentage points compared to 2018.

The Ministry of Education has announced that the international report Talis dedicated to the International Study on the teaching-learning process 2024 was launched on Tuesday. For Romania, the international consortium that managed Talis 2024 has selected, in accordance with the Methodology of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), 216 educational units, with a sample of 4,000 teachers.

Thus, it is shown that, in Romania, teachers have, on average, 45 years, equal value statistically with the OECD average (45 years). In addition, 32% of teachers are 50 years old and above (below OECD average: 37%) and 10% of teachers are under 30 (similar to OECD average: 10%). Since 2018, the share of 50 -year -old teachers has grown by 6 percentage points.

Using artificial intelligence over the OECD average

According to the document, 44% of the teachers have professional experience from outside the educational system (less than the OECD average: 57%), and 7% of the teachers are at the “second career” (less than the OECD average: 8%).

In Romania, 3% of teachers work in schools where online/hybrid lessons were taught in the month before the study (below the OECD average: 16%), and 46% used in their activity (above the OECD average: 36%). Of those who have not used, 58% say they have no skills (below the OECD average: 75%), 39% declare lack of infrastructure (similar to the OECD average: 37%).

At the same time, 83% of the recent graduates believe that their initial formation had high quality (above the OECD average: 75%). “Between 2018 and 2024: the share of graduates who declared themselves prepared” enough “or” very “for disciplinary content decreased by 12 percentage points, and for general pedagogy with 18 percentage points,” the document shows. Regarding the initiation programs, the percentage increased by 36 percentage points between 2018 and 2024.

In Romania, 94% of teachers say that directors have good professional relationships with staff (above the OECD average: 86%), 90% receive useful feedback from directors (above the OECD average: 77%), 95% say that directors trust teachers (over the OECD average: 92%). At the same time, 96% state that teachers and students understand each other well (similar to the OECD average: 96%), 80% consider them to be appreciated by students (above the OECD average: 71%). “This percentage decreases in the case of teachers in schools with more than 30% students from socio -economic disadvantaged families,” the document is mentioned.

Regarding the relationship with parents, 74% states that teachers are appreciated by parents (above the OECD average: 65%), 44% collaborate with parents for educational activities at least once a month (above the OECD average: 25%).

Only 7% of teachers feel stressed

In Romania, 42% states that teachers are appreciated in society (above the OECD average: 22%), 21% think that teachers' opinions are valued by decision makers (above the OECD average: 16%, but with 3 percentage points less than in 2018), 59% of beginners chose the profession of teacher as the first professional option (similar to 58%).

In addition, 81% of teachers “agree” or “agree that they are satisfied with their employment conditions (except for salaries) (more than the OCDE average: 68%). The level of satisfaction of the teachers regarding the employment conditions (except for salaries) has increased by 7 percentage points from 2018 until now. Also, 57% are satisfied with salaries (above the OECD average: 39%), an increase of 34 percentage points compared to 2018.

At the same time, 7% of the teachers say that they feel high stress in the workplace (below the OECD average: 19%), 4% say that the work affects their mental health “very much” (below the OECD average: 10%), 3% say that they affect their physical health “(below the OECD: 8%). Between 2018 and 2024, the share of teachers who experience a high level of stress in their activity has increased by 2 percentage points. The most common sources of stress are indicated responsibility for results (43%), discipline in class (37%), excessive administrative tasks (37%).

Also, 96% of teachers in Romania say they are satisfied with the job (above the OECD average: 89%). This percentage increased by 2 percentage points compared to 2018. However, 11% of teachers under 30 intend to leave the profession in the next 5 years (below the OECD average: 20%).
