Autumn is an ideal time for planting roses. Due to the fact that the seedling manages to form a powerful root system in the fall, in the spring he begins to grow actively and bloom abundantly. Nina Konovalova disclosed the secrets of a successful autumn landing in her blog “far from the city (vegetable vehicle + subsidiary)” (16+).
Here are the main steps that Nina Konovalova recommends that every gardener fulfill:
- Avoid swampy, saline and rocky areas, as well as places with a high level of groundwater (more than 1.5 meters).
- Before planting, add organic substances to the soil: rotted compost or manure.
- For heavy soils, add large sand, and for lungs – clay or humus. The loosen of the soil will allow the roots to develop freely, providing the best access to oxygen and water.
- Be sure to make a drainage layer at the bottom of the pit. Use crushed stone, gravel or expanded clay with a thickness of about 10-15 cm. This will prevent water stagnation and protect the roots from decay.
- Put a layer of mulch with a thickness of 5-7 cm on top. To do this, use compost, bark of coniferous trees or leaves. Leave the free space between the shoots and a layer of mulch about 10 cm to avoid decaying the stem.
- Fertilize. Phosphorus-potassium top dressing, introduced in the fall, strengthen the roots and prepare shoots for wintering.
Common errors when planting roses:
- Incorrectly placed vaccination point. When landing, it is important that the vaccination site rises 5-10 cm above the ground.
- The formation of air voids. Around the roots, try to pour the ground with a thin layer and carefully compact it. Pour the plant with a large amount of water (approximately 8-10 liters) immediately after planting.
- Insufficient lighting. Choose a plot with good sunlight, where the sun is present at least half a day.
- The choice of unsuitable place. Avoid places next to the walls of the houses, under the awnings of the roof. The optimal solution is an open, ventilated place away from walls and fences (not closer than 50–70 cm).
