The E24 economic magazine announced the takeover of the two largest data centers in Norway by the Chinese investor. “Cryptocurrency mines” consume huge amounts of electricity. For this reason, in the Finnmark region it begins to lack it, and the government does not rule out prohibiting this activity.

Jihan Wu, whose property was estimated by the Forbes magazine for $ 1.8 billion, was to become the owner of computing centers in Trondheim and around Molde. The Chinese, which is the “cryptocurrency baron” referred to in the media, began to be objects whose demand for electricity is to be 247 MW. Annually, they will need more than half of the power consumed by the city of Krakow.
At the same time, the Norwegian Water Management and Energy Office said that in recent weeks, in the north of the Finnmark region, several dozen new applications for connecting to energy networks submitted by the so -called Mini-copyright cryptocurrency. Electricity suppliers alerted the authorities in Oslo with a risk of current deficiency in this part of the country.
“Increased demand from recipients may in a short perspective lead to the displacement of other corporate clients from the network,” said at E24 CEO of NVE KJetil Lund.
The Norwegian RME market regulator indicated that the owners of centers of cryptocurrency acquisitions can consciously reduce their demand and divide data centers into smaller, so as not to exceed the limits above which they would have to stand in a queue for connecting to the network. In Finnmark, electricity suppliers must immediately attach the recipient to the network if his power demand is not to exceed 5 MW.
“It seems that entities operating on the cryptocurrency market have adapted to these provisions, thanks to which they quickly obtain network connections. They declare the demand for 2.2 MW, which gives 20 GWH consumption a year. There may be electricity for new companies,” said the Director of NVE.
The Statnett State operator announced that it is planned to reduce the level entitling to immediately connect to the network in Finnmark to 1 MW. The Ministry of Energy has announced a reaction to the possible celebration of the regulations by the cryptocurrency industry.
“The government does not want to extract cryptocurrencies in Norway. That's why we are working on several solutions, including a temporary ban on extraction of cryptocurrencies,” said E24 Head of the Terje Aasland.
