The police detained several people on Friday, when hundreds of protesters gathered in front of a center of the Immigration and Customs (ICE) service in the suburbs of the city of Chicago, an area in which multiple protests took place in the context of anti-Imigration federal measures, Reuters reports.

The tensions have been at a high level in Chicago in recent weeks, because the administration of US President Donald Trump has intensified his efforts to deport immigrants who live in the US, arresting many without a criminal record.

The governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, said this week that the Trump administration has asked the Pentagon to send troops to the state administered by Democrats.

In front of the Broadview detention center, behind the barriers raised by ICE, the demonstrators initially protested on Friday, singing Christian hymns and Jewish songs. Then, Gregory Bovino, the commander of the American Border Protection Service, who leads the federal border control effort in Chicago, arrived with agents equipped with gas masks and armored vehicles.

The protesters began to rush and clashes between them and law enforcement. Some of the protesters shouted obscenities.

Illinois state police officers have made several detention.

“It is scandalous. I am here in silence, and they push us from the street and on the sidewalk and use violence against us,” said Kevin Ryan, veteran of the US Marine Church and democratic candidate for the US Senate.

In the Chicago area there were multiple protests in which the increased federal presence was condemned, and the Broadview Center, a majority African-American locality located about 21 kilometers west of Chicago, became the central point of demonstrations.

The protesters criticized what they claim is a similar police action in other cities run by Democrats, including New York, Los Angeles, Washington and Portland.

Prosecutor General Pam Bondi ordered on Monday to the officials of the Justice Department to “defend the ICE centers, especially in Portland and Chicago”.
