MEPs will debate on Monday and will vote on the two censure motions against the President of the European Commission on Thursday, Ursula von Der Leyen, who will be able to evaluate the status of its majority in Strasbourg, AFP reports.
This calendar was agreed on Wednesday by the leaders of the parliamentary groups.
Deposited by the far right and the radical left, these motions have virtually no chance of removing Ursula von der Leyen, but they risk highlighting the tensions in the last year.
The opposition intends in particular to denounce the commercial agreement signed this summer by Ursula von der Leyen with the United States, which many MEPs, including those who support the chairman of the Commission, consider it unbalanced.
At the beginning of July, the European Parliament largely rejected a motion of censorship of the extreme right that targeted the head of the European Executive.
The examination of three censorship motions in a few months is unprecedented in Strasbourg. This reflects the change of the political configuration from the European elections of June 2024, marked by the ascension of the extreme right and the consolidation of the right.
In order to succeed in a censorship motion, the two thirds of the expressed votes should be obtained as well as the absolute majority of the members of the Parliament, ie at least 361 MEPs.
