According to a Norwegian politician, Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened European allies that the US could abandon their obligations to NATO if Member States did not increase defense expenses.

President Trump's biggest reservations concerned Germany and France. The US President alleged that “they do not pay what the US is guilty”, and their defensive budgets were only a fraction of the general NATO budget.
