Moscow's revenge. Armenian alcohol suddenly stopped meeting Russian standards

Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's sanitary supervision authority, said on Friday that it had detected it on the Russian market Armenian alcoholic products that do not meet mandatory requirementsand ordered a halt to their sale. The Office did not specify which standards were allegedly violated.

This is the latest in a series of bans on Armenian goods. A few days earlier, the Russian agricultural inspection announced temporary restrictions on the import of all flowers originating from Armenia or transported through its territory.

The announcement came a day after a similar measure was introduced against Armenian mineral water Yermuk. The Russian authorities imposed a total ban on the import and sale of this brand, citing too high concentrations of bicarbonates, chlorides and sulphates.

Rospotrebnadzor stated that consumers may be misled about the medicinal properties of the product.

Moscow is taking revenge on Yerevan for its pro-European tendencies

These restrictions come in the context of deteriorating relations between Russia and Armenia, which was once one of Moscow's closest allies in the South Caucasus.

Russian politicians accuse Armenia of taking “unfriendly steps”, including the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the European Political Community summit, where Armenian leaders were also present.

Putin warned Armenia to consider the consequences of rapprochement with Europe, citing the example of Ukraine and suggesting that Yerevan should first hold a referendum regarding withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union if it wants to “part with Moscow gently, sensibly and to the benefit of both sides.”
