The US Department of Energy announced on Wednesday that it intends to cancel over $ 13 billion that the Biden administration had promised to subsidize wind, solar, batteries and electric vehicles, Reuters reports.
So far it has not been clear what funds are targeted.
“By returning these funds to the US taxpayer, the Trump administration asserts its commitment to promote a more accessible, reliable and safe energy and to be more responsible administrators of taxpayers' money,” the department said.
In the speech on Tuesday in the UN General Assembly, US President Donald Trump said of climate change as “the biggest scam in history”, and about the concept of carbon imprint that it is “a farce invented with people with malicious intent.”
Donald Trump pleaded to maximize oil and gas production, which was already at a record level when he returned to the White House in January, while reducing renewable energy subsidies and electric vehicles.
The US Secretary for Energy, Chris Wright mentioned the cancellation of funds in a press conference in New York.
Wright claims that Trump has sent a message according to which the UN and many countries “simply deviated from the right way in terms of climate change, exaggerating them as the biggest threat to the world. This has generated massive expenses with a very low positive impact.”
However, the number of jobs in the solar, wind energy and other clean energy industries has increased three times faster than in the rest of the US activity in 2024, a study published last week by the E2 Advocacy group, which claims that many of them risk disappearing due to Trump's efforts.
The US Secretary also said that no plan for possible participation in the UN discussions on the climate in Brazil in November. On the other hand, Wright said he likes to talk about energy and climate with people who see things differently from him, so “nothing is impossible” when it comes to his presence in Brazil.
