Igor Krasnov, a former general prosecutor known for his central role in repressing the opposition by Kremlin, was appointed president of the Supreme Court of Russia, the Federation Council confirmed in a statement published on September 24, according to The Kyiv Independent.

Krasnov applied for this position in August, after the death of Irina Podnosova – former classmate of President Vladimir Putin -, who led the Court from April 2024 until his death, in July 2025, following a cancer. Krasnov was the only candidate for this position.

The appointment was unanimously approved, all 160 senators voting “for”, after which Vladimir Putin signed a decree by which he officially confirmed.

Through another decree, Putin designated Alexandr Guțan, he was sent presidential in the North-Vestic Federal District, as General Prosecutor of Russia.

Krasnov has held high -ranking positions in the law enforcement structures and in Russia's judicial system for over two decades.

He started his career in the investigative agencies in the early 2000s and joined the central headquarters of the Investigation Committee after its establishment in 2011.

He drew attention at national level after leading the investigation into the assassination, in 2015, of the opposition leader Boris Nemțov, one of Vladimir Putin's most important political opponents.

Since 2016, Krasnov has been deputy of the president of the investigation committee, Alexandr Bastrîkin. In January 2020, Putin named Prosecutor General.

During his term, Krasnov supervised the arrest of the leader of the Russian opposition Aleksei Navalnîi, at his return from Germany, in 2021, and later contributed to the designation of all organizations associated with Navalnîi as an “extremist”, according to The Moscow Times.

Krasnov's appointment takes place against the background of criticisms from anti -corruption organizations.

An investigation of the anti -corruption foundation, close to the Russian opposition, shows that members of Krasnov's family have acquired, in the last three years – a period that coincides with the large -scale invasion of Ukraine -, real estate evaluated to almost 1.5 billion rubles (about $ 18 million).
