Kendama, very popular before pandemic, returns in force in teenage preferences, to the delight of parents who see a way to keep children away from phones. The children take it with them at school, where real championships are organized. It seems that it is the central concern in their spare time, from the confessions of the parents on social networks.

The problem intervenes when the child wants a particular model. During this period, certain models are “sold out” in physical and online stores. And then parents ask for help on the Internet. “I found out with astonishment that it is not the right thing, it is not Krom Kendama”, confesses a parent who ordered such a toy to give him a gift to his birthday. Then he began to look, first online, but to be delivered on time, finally asking for a guidance for a store that has something like this.

Adolescents who are not lucky enough to find what they want in their city for tens of kilometers only to fulfill their desire. A store in Craiova posted a video with two rifles that would have come by train from Slatina to buy their desired toys.

“And my son took her out of the closet.”

A kendama of the vogue is not exactly cheap. The price for “a bile hammer”, as some parents see this toy, starts from about 200 lei. The much cheaper variants, which some parents ordered from sites like Shein or Temu, or bought them from various stores, were rejected by children. Some parents also expressed their dissatisfaction with the products bought from pretentious sites, leaving no favorable reviews and explaining that either the paint or cracked the wood or …

Krom Pop Kendama and Sweets Kendamas, each in different variants, appear most often in parents' searches.

For young people who were eight years ago they had such concerns now became a good opportunity to sell the old toy hidden by drawers, if it does not arouse their interest. “And my son took her out of the closet,” He confesses a parent, but not for the purpose of marketing, but because at school, in breaks, real competitions are organized.

In the discussions on social networks, including teachers, who encourage parents to give the children the desired toy because they have noticed that the phones have been set aside, not to use the toy helps them coordinate their movements and educate their patience. In other schools, on the other hand, parents say, they would have been forbidden, on the grounds that accidents can happen and even that students would have started using them as “weapons”.

How did the “madness kendama” appear

The toy is known as a traditional Japanese, but is based on a game from France, Bilboquet. The game involves handling a wooden ball (Tama), which is caught by a handle (ken) with a twine. The ball is thrown and must be caught in various cups or on the spike (the tip of the handle). After a lot of training, the players get to perform movements that are true stunts.

The game took a very big magnitude in Romania in 2016-2017, becoming a real urban phenomenon among children and teenagers, but “caught” on many adults. CRBL is one of the public persons who at that time contributed to the popularity of Kendama. Players have started to gather in communities, both physically and online. Competitions and demonstrations with professional athletes have appeared. The “wave” began to extinguish when other toys became more interesting.

After the pandemic, about two or three years ago, Kendama began to be popularized again, Tiktok in particular, arousing the interest of the new generation of teenagers.

Parents are aware that the interest in the game that takes the young people out and puts them face to face will not be very long.

It is a trend, it is clear, but I hope to last ”, It is the opinion of a parent who adds that he would be willing to pay an even bigger amount for such a toy considering that, at least for a while, he defeated the phone.
