“On September 22 (…) the United Nations Security Council will gather to an extraordinary meeting in response to a gross violation of Russia on Friday,” wrote in a statement of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Estonian services, three Russian MiG-31 fighters flew into the airspace of Estonia near the island of Vaindloo on the Gulf of Finnish on Friday morning and remained there for about 12 minutes. My fighters did not have flight plans and their transponders were turned off. They also did not establish two -way radio communication with Estonian air traffic control.

Vaindloo, located about 100 km northeast of Tallinn, is the northernmost point of Estonia.

Prime Minister Kristen Michal announced that Estonia decided to submit a request to launch consultation pursuant to art. 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty in connection with this incident.

NATO will meet on Tuesday

The North Atlantic Council will gather on Tuesday to discuss the violation of the airspace of Estonia through Russia – the Reuters agency said on Sunday, citing two people familiar with the case.

Earlier, NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart reported that the meeting would take place this week.

The North Atlantic Council is the most important NATO decision authority. It is made up of representatives of all member states of the alliance (usually ambassadors at NATO, but if necessary also foreign ministers, defense or heads of states and governments).

Estonia decided to submit an application regarding the launch of consultation pursuant to art. 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty in connection with the interference of three Russian MiG-31 fighters in the Estonian airspace. They flew into the airspace of Estonia near the Vaindloo island on the Finnish bay on Friday morning and remained there for about 12 minutes.

Art. 4 NATO is as follows: “The parties will consult together, whenever any of them, territorial integrity, political independence or security of either party will be at risk. (PAP)

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna emphasized that Russia had violated the airspace of Estonia earlier this year, which in itself is “unacceptable”, but Friday's invasion is “insolence without precedent”.

Earlier, Russian drones invaded Poland (September 10) and Romania (September 13). (PAP)
