The government of the prime minister of Portugal Luis Montenegro will recognize Palestine's independence on Sunday – on Friday evening the office of the head of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Paulo Ranel passed.

The ministry of diplomacy corrected the previous Friday information, provided by France, according to which Palestine's recognition by Portugal was to take place on Monday during a conference in New York.
The office of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal confirmed that a representative of the government in Lisbon would take part in a New York conference alongside the representatives of France, Andora, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Malta, Great Britain and San Marino. These countries are to recognize Palestinian independence on Monday.
Actions taken by the Portuguese authorities to recognize Palestine's independence lasted 15 years – since the parliament approved the guidelines and recommendations for the government regarding the recognition of Palestinian statehood.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Portugal Paulo Rangel announced on September 15 that “there are no obstacles anymore” that could hinder the recognition of Palestine.
