Context
The Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill (Vladimir Gundyaev) supported Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. In his sermon in early March 2022, he justified the invasion of the alleged defense of the “residents of Donbass.” In June, Gundyaev said that the Russian army is fighting in Ukraine because of the “internal feeling brought up by the Orthodox faith”, and supposedly “protects Russia on the battlefield” in Ukraine. In September, he, speaking of mobilization in the Russian Federation, said that death in the war in Ukraine “washes all sins.”
For the support of the war, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Czech Republic and Ukraine were introduced against Patriarch Kirill Sanction. Lithuania forbade him to enter five years. Estonia also introduced the ban on the entrance to the Patriarch. The SBU put him on the wanted list.
The European Union at least twice tried to impose sanctions against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, each time they were blocked by Hungary.
Journalists found out that in the database of the tax service of the Russian Federation, Gundyaev is listed under the third name – Ivan Zakharovich Prokhorov.
