With the beginning of the conservation season, specialists of the regional Rospotrebnadzor reminded of botulism – a serious threat that could be hidden in banks with pickles. This serious disease affects the nervous system and without timely treatment can lead to death.

Experts warn that the causative agent of botulism is activated in hermetically closed banks, where there is no oxygen access, and at the same time does not show itself: it does not change the taste, color, nor the smell of the product. The bank may not even swell.
In order to protect themselves, Rospotrebnadzor is strongly recommended not to buy homemade canned food, as well as smoked fish or meat in the markets and random sellers.
During home canning, experts advise adhere to strict rules: use only fresh and carefully washed products, and also not to break the recipe, reducing the amount of salt, vinegar or heat treatment time. Ready blanks should be stored only in cold places – in the refrigerator or cellar.
The key safety rule that will help destroy toxin if it is nevertheless formed in the bank is boiling the contents of canned food from “dangerous” products (mushrooms, meat, fish) for 15-20 minutes immediately before meals. It is especially important to observe this rule if canned foods are intended for children.
If, after using homework, signs of malaise appeared, you must immediately consult a doctor, be sure to say that you ate canned food. The remains of the product should be saved for laboratory analysis.
