The Hoekstra climate commissioner informed after a meeting of the environment ministers on Thursday in Brussels that Member States did not agree on the new EU goal regarding the reduction of emissions in 2040. However, they adopted a statement of intent under the Paris Agreement regarding the purpose of the purpose of 2035.

Hoekstra said that the ministers talked about two issues: the climate goal for 2040 and national climate plans after 2030 as part of the Paris Agreement. The latter issue concerns voluntary plans that should be updated this year before the COP30 climate summit organized in November at Belem in Brazil.
The declaration of intent confirms the EU commitment to the Paris Agreement, which assumes limiting the growth of global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius. It indicates that the EU is to submit plans to COP30 with an indicative target for 2035 in the range from 66.25 percent. up to 72.5 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels.
Hoekstra emphasized that both issues are related to each other, but the dates of work on them no longer, therefore postponing the assumption of the goal at 2040 should not affect the update of plans under the Paris Agreement, with which the EU should be ready to the top in Brazil.
He added that the purpose of the goal at 2040 will now go to the European Council, where the leaders will agree on their conditions. (PAP)
