Asked, on Thursday night, at Euronews, what will happen to the prices of the basic food after the expiration of the current ceiling, the prime minister explained that the authorities currently collect the data needed for an evaluation.

Since the 1, this ceiling would expire and, at the end of June, when it was extended by another three months, the discussion in the Government was that it would be the last extension. (…) From the perspective of capping prices for food, there are three substantive aspects. First of all, the measure of intervening in the market, in general, is not one that solves things, because any kind of interventions generate disturbances. (…) If you limit, for example, in an area a price, just like a water mattress that you jump, those who want to recover their addition can move the growing losses to other products ”said Bolojan.

Agri -food production and correct competition

The prime minister stressed that the long -term solution is not the ceiling, but the investment in the agri -food industry.

“In order to have good prices and quality products, we must support the increase of agri -food production in Romania, to support the processing, so that we have more competitive Romanian products. (…) In the coming years we must recover very large deficits and ensure the existence of a correct competition.“, Explained Bolojan.

The possibility of a new extension

Regarding the continuation of the ceiling, the prime minister said that a decision will be made on the basis of clear analyzes.

“We do not make such decisions on the foot. The previous extension was taken immediately, because it was three days after the Government was installed and we could not study. Now we gather all the data in the market, we see what the evolution was, what will be the reaction of the big distributors and, depending on these data, we will take the decision, which we will communicate, which we will communicate.”said the prime minister.

Reactions in the coalition

The Government spokesman, Ioana Dogioiu, announced on Saturday that the decision not to extend the ceiling was taken by the ruling coalition “without any contrary opinion“At that time.

However, the interim leader of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, asked for urgent explanations from the governing partners, stating that “The subject was not discussed in the coalition and PSD cannot agree with this decision ”.
