The US Department of Commerce announced on Tuesday that it will take into account in the coming weeks, industry requests for imposing new customs duties on the imported car components, for national security reasons, reports Reuters.
In May, the Trump administration has imposed 25% customs duties in the car imports and car components worth over 460 billion dollars per year, but has since concluded tariffs for some countries, Agerpres notes.
On Monday, the US Trade Department informed that internal car manufacturers or car component producers, or any industry association, may request customs duties for car components, for national security reasons.
“Currently, the auto industry rapidly develops new technologies, including in the area of alternative propulsion systems, autonomous driving capabilities and other advanced technologies. The industry needs opportunities to identify new and innovative products, which can also be used in defense,” said the American Trade Department.
Last month, the institution had announced that it increases aluminum and steel customs taxes to over 400 products, including car components, worth $ 240 billion per year.
