The Wirecard scandal has its origin in June 2020. It was then that auditors of the German tycoon reported that the company's account lacks almost EUR 2 billion (approx. 8.5 billion PLN) in cash, until half of its revenues, half of its revenues exists only on paper. This caused a huge stir, because earlier Wirecard was considered one of the best fintechs in Germany. In 2006, the company reached the 15th position in the TECDAX ranking in terms of market capitalization. The company even conducted talks on the takeover of Deutsche Bank.
After the outbreak of the scandal, there were reports that suggested that Operational Director Wirecard Jan Marsalek could be one of the most valuable Russian spies in Europe. The Austrian escaped to Belarus and there was a trace of him. Interpol sent an international arrest warrant after him.
