Exercises are organized since the 1970s – initially within the Warsaw Pact countries. After the collapse of the USSR, the maneuvers took place in the current formula for the first time in 1999 and since then they have been organized every four years.

Experts point out that ZAPAD-25 maneuvers show the readiness of Russia and Belarus to conduct comprehensive military operations, combining conventional operations with nuclear potential, which may increase tension in the region of Eastern Europe.

The Belarusian leader Aleksander Łukaszenka emphasized that During the maneuvers, the use of Russian tactical nuclear weapons was also practiced. – We practice everything there, from shooting with conventional weapons to nuclear heads. We must be able to be able to do it all – said Lukashenko, adding, however, that maneuvers “are absolutely not a threat to anyone.”

The Ministry of Defense of Russia announced that Tu-160 strategic bombers, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, practiced launching missiles at the Barents Seaflying over the neutral waters for about four hours in the escort of MiG-31 fighters.
At the same time, the Northern Fleet Maritime Infantry was practicing the denial of the landing in the Murmansk regionusing armored personnel carriers, drones, anti -tank grenades and automatic weapons. Maneuvers took place on 41 training grounds And they covered not only Russian and Belarusian forces, but also contingents from the Member States of Zakbb, the Community of Independent States and the Shanghai Organization of Cooperation. Units from India, Iran and several African countries, including Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, also participated in the exercises.
