German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday rejected the claim of his Polish counterpart Karol Nawrocki that Germany will pay Poland new damages for World War II, the German press agency reports.
On the occasion of Nawrocki's Berlin's visit, Steinmeier reaffirmed that the problem was “legally clarified from the German point of view,” wrote, in a message published on the social network X, the spokesman of the German president.
The head of the German state added that promoting the commemoration of the war remains a concern of both parties.
Nawrocki, who is in his first official visit to Germany since taking over the presidential mandate, has insisted that Poland still has the right to damages for the damage suffered in the war, notes Agerpres.
Before leaving for Berlin, he announced his intention to discuss the subject with Steinmeier and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The DPA appreciates that the dialogue with Steinmeier on this topic has already taken place.
The president of Germany received his guests with military honors at the Bellevue Palace, his official residence. Subsequently, the two withdrew for discussions that-according to the information obtained by the German press agency-highlighted the agreement on the need for close bilateral cooperation, based on confidence, between their nations.
Despite the opinion differences in damages, the atmosphere was friendly and constructive, and Nawrocki invited Steinmeier to Poland.
Subsequently, the Polish president left for the chancellery of Germany, where he was going to meet Merz.
Germany has already granted Poland compensation at the end of World War II through agreements involving the Soviet Union, and in 1953 the Warsaw communist regime has given up any other damages since 1954.
