President Nicușor Dan said on Monday evening, at Antena 3 CNN, that he is dissatisfied with the results of the education system, stressing that the problem is not only about the measures adopted recently by the Government, but what the Romanian school offers at the end of the study cycle.

“Once it was decided that these measures will be taken, they were taken before September 8, when the school started. When I said I was totally dissatisfied, I referred to what a child arrives after finishing the Romanian education system,” said Nicușor Dan.

The head of state explained that, in the context of budget pressures, the government and unions had different positions on reforms.

“Under the pressure of the deficit some measures have been taken. The unions have an opinion, the government has an opinion. To reconcile these opinions, following the discussions with the unions I said we will return after two months to see,” the president added.

President Nicuşor Dan declared last week, on Wednesday, that he is not satisfied with the situation in education and that he promised the leaders of the unions in education that things will be evaluated according to the figures after two months from the beginning of the school year.

“I want, of course, for each of us to put the interest of the children in the first place (…) My promise was that we will evaluate, as I said, with the figures on the table, with the opinion of all the parties involved, after two months from the beginning of the school year,” said the head of the state on TVR, according to Agerpres.

Asked if he was pleased with the state of education, Nicuşor Dan replied: “I am not at all satisfied.”

The president received the representatives of the Education unions last month to talk to them, in the context in which the first day of school started with a large protest in the Capital.

Education trade union leaders announced on Monday at the end of six hours of rally and after discussions with President Nicușor Dan, that the protests will continue: “The teachers will not give up pressure until the goals are achieved.”

On September 8, for the first time in the last 35 years, the first day of school has been held, in many schools, without festivities. Over 10,000 teachers from all over the country protested, for about six hours compared to the austerity measures in education.

The Senate debated on Monday, from 4:00 pm, a gold deposited against the Minister of Education, Daniel David, which he accused of promoting a package of measures with catastrophic consequences on the quality of education and on the stability of the teaching profession.
