The summer of 2025 was marked by waves of heat, drought and floods. The extreme phenomena caused the European economy of 43 billion euros, quoted by The Guardian.

The immediate impact on the economy of a single brutal summer, marked by heat, drought and flood, has risen to 0.26 % of the EU economic production in 2024, according to a study published this month.

The study, led by the savings of Sehrish Usman from the University of Mannheim (Germany), with two co -authors from the European Central Bank, is based on both weather and economic models to estimate the damages caused by extreme weather events.

The study estimates that, by 2029, the macroeconomic costs generated by the disasters of the summer of 2025, which are now 43 billion euros, could reach 126 billion euros.

The biggest damage was recorded in Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Bulgaria, each of these countries undergoing losses exceeding 10 billion euros this year. These were followed by other countries, including Spain, Italy and Portugal. And the figures, the authors of the study say, are underestimated, because they do not take into account the cumulative effects (heat waves and drought often coexist) and other repercussions of climate change, such as fires.

“The real costs of extreme meteorological phenomena are revealed gradually because these events affect the lives and means of living through a wide range of channels that exceed the initial impact,” said Sehrish Usman, an economist at the University of Mannheim and the main author of the study.

Stéphane Hallegate, the chief economist on the climatic issues of the World Bank, who did not participate in the study, said that he confirms that the economic impact of extreme weather phenomena is wider than direct effects and lasts longer than people imagine.
