Neurosurgeons of the Krasnoyarsk BSMP have learned to perform a complex operation to restore the facial nerve. The master class for doctors was held by a plastic surgeon and microsurgeon from Tomsk Andrei Baitinger, the Ministry of Health said in the regional Ministry of Health.
On the operating table was a woman with paralysis arising after the removal of the brain tumor. Half of her face did not work – the patient could not smile, close her eyes, raise an eyebrow and perform other facial movements.
Surgeons connected a healthy nerve branch that is responsible for the work of the chewing muscle to the non -working facial nerve. As noted by Andrei Baitinger, the technique is one of the most effective for the restoration of facial expressions.
“Working with such patients requires the help of a speech therapist and rehabilitologist. This is a long process that requires significant efforts, ”said the acting Head of the Neurosurgical Department of the BSMP Vladimir Gulyaev.
The operation was carried out using a modern operating microscope, which provides high accuracy of manipulations. Previously, such interventions were not performed in the walls of the BSMP.
