Two trains derailed on Sunday morning in different areas of the Leningrad region, leading to the death of a train mechanic and disturbing railway traffic, the governor announced.

These incidents took place a few hours after the explosion on Saturday evening of a device on a railway section of the Western Oriol region, which caused the death of three people.

“The rescue operations are in progress after a locomotive derailment near the Semrino station in Gatchina district, in the Leningrad region,” said the governor of the region, Alexandre Drozdenko, on Telegram.

“The train driver died. He was stuck in the cab and died in the ambulance after being unloaded,” he added.

A freight train carrying 15 empty tank wagons also derailed on a railway section further south, without making victims, Drozdenko had said in a previous message.

“Investigators study the track of a possible sabotage,” he added.

The Russian railway network has been repeatedly affected by derailments, explosions and fires that the authorities attribute to Ukrainian sabotages.

Kiev does not generally assume responsibility for these incidents, but often greets them, arguing that Russia uses its railway network to transport troops and equipment to its forces in Ukraine.
