The president of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, said that the UN peacekeeping forces could play a role in supporting a peace solution in the Ukraine, DPA said on Sunday.
“If a peace treaty is reached, it must be assured as best as possible,” Baerbock told the Sunday edition of the Bild newspaper.
“And if most of the Member States say that blue headphones are needed for this, then it is something that, hopefully, will ensure a sustainable peace,” added the former German Foreign Minister.
Ukraine's allies are working on the backstage for months to ensure a new potential phase of the war, which could range from an armistice to a peace treaty. Such efforts, however, would first require Moscow's availability to go into negotiations.
Ukraine defends himself against a total Russian invasion of February 2022 and asks for security guarantees in the event of a break or cessation of hostilities.
Some military and expert planners say that a number of soldiers of millions may be needed, for example from European allies. Another possibility would be a UN peacekeeping mission, with blue headphones that act as observers.
Baerbock officially took over the position of president of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. His new role in New York is largely ceremonial and should not be confused with the role of the UN Secretary General.
