“No one expected anything like this.” The first reaction from Tehran after the failure of negotiations with the US

Tehran said on Sunday that “no one expected” the United States and Iran to reach an agreement from the first round of talks, according to a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, after the announcement of the failure of talks in Islamabad aimed at ending the Middle East war.
“It was obvious from the beginning that we should not expect to reach an agreement in one (negotiation) session. Nobody expected this,” Esmail Baghaei told Iranian state television, evoking “an atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust,” according to AFP.
“Of course, our contacts with Pakistan, as well as with other friends in the region, will continue,” added the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman
US Vice President JD Vance, who led the US delegation to Pakistan to negotiate, left Islamabad on Sunday morning after announcing that no deal had been reached.
Confirming the end of the talks, Iran attributed their failure to “unreasonable demands” by the United States, according to Iranian state television.
Baghaei noted the “complexity of the issues and conditions surrounding the negotiations.”
“New topics have been added in this round, especially the Strait of Hormuz issue and regional files, each with its own specific conditions and considerations,” he added.
