US emissary Adam Boehler indicated on Saturday, during a rare visit by an American official in Kabul, that the United States will exchange prisoners with the Taliban government, AFP reports.

“In relation to the issue of citizens held in Afghanistan and the United States, Adam Boehler said the two countries will exchange prisoners,” said Taliban Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar.

No date was specified for this exchange, which was not immediately commented on by Washington.

It is believed that at least one American citizen, Mahmood Habibi, is detained in Afghanistan. The United States has provided a $ 5 million reward for information about where they are, while Taliban deny any involvement in its 2022 disappearance.

In March, an American, George Glezmann, former aircraft mechanic detained for more than two years by the Taliban, was released after a visit by Boehler to Kabul.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio threatened, in January 2025, that he will put rewards on the heads of the Taliban government leaders, coming after finding out that more American prisoners could be kept in Afghanistan than before.

“If this is true, we will have to immediately put a great reward on the heads of their leaders, maybe even bigger than the one we had on Bin Laden,” he added, referring to the Al-Qaida leader killed by the US forces in 2011.
