“What happened here is a typical counter -espionage operation,” President Nicușor Dan said on Wednesday, asked about the case of the former deputy director of the Information and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Bălan, who was preventively arrested in Bucharest, being accused of attempted betrayal by transmitting secret information to Belarus..

“What happened here is a typical counter -espionage operation, yes, in our services there are counter -supporting teams, with a continuous activity, with multiple targets and the moment when the result of such a counter -espionage activity is very well chosen to protect people who are involved operatively, so here it was – how to communicate, I can not Allied and with Eurojust, in which the SRI contributed, ”said the head of state, in an interview with TVR 1.

“It seems to me that not only in Romania, but at European level, the fact that there is a hybrid war of Russia, which means cyber attacks on the one hand, on the other hand, massive misinformation campaigns, becomes more and more obvious. That is, we have NATO reports, we have reports of the Great Britain, of the European Union, of Spain, Italy, all of the Campaign misinformation and weakening of democracy that Russia makes in each of these European countries, obviously wishing, if it can, somehow favorable leaders to Russia and, if not, at least to destabilize democracy in these states, ”said Nicușor Dan.

The Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered the preventive arrest for 30 days by Alexandru Bălan, former deputy director of the Information and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova, accused of betrayal and the transmission of secret information to the KGB in Belarus.

Alexandru Bălan, 47 years old, with double citizenship -Moldovan and Romanian -, was erected by prosecutors in Timișoara and transported to Bucharest to give explanations to the investigators.

DIICOT officially communicated on Wednesday that he detained a day ago “a 47 -year -old defendant, with double Moldovan and Romanian citizenship, investigated for committing the crime of attempted treason by transmitting state secret information, in continuous form”.

According to DIICOT, between 2024 – 2025, the suspect made two meetings, both in Budapest – Hungary, with information officers from the State Security Committee – KGB of the Republic of Belarus, with reasonable suspicions that these meetings had the purpose of transmitting instructions and making payments for the services provided.

The investigation, conducted under the aegis of Eurojust, has benefited from the support of information services in Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic, as well as the support of prosecutors in Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Republic of Moldova.
