President Nicușor Dan told Euronews on Tuesday that he is “extremely optimistic” in terms of integration of the Republic of Moldova in the EU after the victory achieved by the pro-European forces in the parliamentary elections on Sunday, “which was undeniable.”
Nicușor Dan estimated that “a three -year term is very realistic” for the accession of the Republic of Moldova at the EU.
“After this victory of the pro -European forces, which has been undeniable, it will follow what has already started, a process of integration in the European Union, for which I am extreme, extremely optimistic, that is, a three -year term is very realistic for this,” said the head of state.
He also spoke about the situation in Transnistria, as well as the effects that a possible victory of the pro-Russian forces could have had the recent parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova.
“There we have some Russian troops. Transnistria is between Moldova and Ukraine. Because the Chisinau authorities are very careful about this phenomenon, for the Russian army, which is dislocated there, it is very difficult to change armament. In this way, it exists, but it is quite weak. If we had some forces, it would have been to Chisinau Threatening for Moldova, and for Ukraine, and including for Romania, ”added the president.
The accession “can be done with Transnistria everything”
Asked how he sees the situation regarding Transnistria from the perspective of the accession process and the possibility of an entry into two steps, the President of Romania replied: “It is a technical issue, which obviously the authorities in Chisinau know better. I think it can be done with Transnistria, so, at this time.”
“As Gagauzia has a status of relative autonomy within the Republic of Moldova, this may have this regime (…).
What did he say about the common calendar with Ukraine
Nicușor Dan was asked if the accession of the Republic of Moldova will be simultaneously with that of Ukraine, and the President of Romania recalled that “the two states have a common negotiation calendar”, saying that he does not believe in a possible “in the next period”.
“There is this difficulty with Hungary, which opposes Ukraine's accession, and there is this discussion, a possible disconnection, which I do not think will happen in the next period, because it would be a very bad signal for Ukraine, and then for Moldova they will begin to be taken regardless of the official opening of the accession chapters,” said Nic.
