On Friday, the press spokeswoman of the Prosecutor General announced that he had submitted a proposal to the EP for consent to pull the MEP Braun to criminal liability in connection with public denial of crimes committed in the former German Nazi KL Auschwitz camp.

On Saturday, Braun, answering questions in this matter during a press conference in Gdańsk dedicated to the security of Poland, said that “he no longer keeps up with those conclusions, whose quantity probably increases every week”.

– This issue is decided whether Polish public life will be managed by external curators who decide what is true in history and in politics, or Polish public life will be managed by servants through servile prosecutors who, breaking constitutional rights, refuse Polish patriots to act and speak in Polish matters – he said.

Stated that This application submitted by the Prosecutor General “neither Ziębie nor heats him”. – How many other applications will this prosecutor's office fries? – he asked and noted that “He will gladly preach the truth as before, in parliaments or in courts”.

– I am to be brought to court, judged, as I understand, exemplary, just as an example for others, so that they do not weigh uncomfortable questions and that they do not engage in inquiring unlimited by Jews, Ukrainians, Anglo -Saxons and a servile government in Warsaw – he said.

He added that he did not accept these rules. – I accept civilized constitutional principles, freedom of speech, the right to inquiries, historical research and the right to publish results, conclusions from these research – he said.

He noted that the constitution guarantees him this right. – I am curious how prosecutors will do it, how the judges undertake it – he emphasized.

– Prosecutor Żurek, in my opinion, as well as other participants of public life (…) commit, I think, a delicacy consisting in exerting political pressure to an independent prosecutor's office in theory – he said.

He assured him that he would appear at every call and submit explanations.

The case is about two Braun's statements, who on July 10 on Radio WNET and July 14 as part of the podcast “Jan Pospieszalski talks” on the YouTube channel questioned the genocide in gas chambers in the German Nazi Auschwitz camp. These statements met with condemnation from politicians, the Institute of National Remembrance and the Clergy.

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek submitted to the European Parliament a request for consent to the pull of MEP Grzegorz Braun to criminal liability in connection with public denial of crimes committed in the former German Nazi Camp of KL Auschwitz. To pull the MP to the European Parliament to criminal liability, it is necessary to obtain the consent of the EP.

The initiation of criminal proceedings by the IPN investigator's division took place after the notifications submitted in this matter by the left MP Anna Maria Żukowska, Director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum dr. Piotr Cywiński, president of the Basta Bartosz Staszewski Foundation, as well as after the analysis of materials from the Warsaw Śródmieście -Północ District Prosecutor's Office, which from July 10 conducted checking activities regarding Braun's statements.

The PG spokeswoman in a Friday announcement wrote that “the evidence gathered in the proceedings justifies sufficiently suspicion of the MEP of Grzegorz Braun's two crimes” under Art. 55 of the Act on the Institute of National Remembrance saying that “who in public and contrary to facts denies the crimes, including Nazi and communist, is subject to a fine or punishment of imprisonment of up to three years.”

After receiving the application to the EP, chairwoman Robert Metsool will inform the entire chamber of this at the plenary session. The nearest starts on Monday in Strasbourg. In the next step, the case is addressed to the PE's legal committee, which is preparing a report on this subject. The commission is not obliged by any dates to prepare this document, but it usually lasts several months. Then the application is subjected to voting at a plenary session.

This is another conclusion in the case of MEP Braun. The earlier, which was directed to the legal committee of the European Parliament and its procedure is underway, concerns the suspicion of Braun's committing six crimes. It goes (as the prosecutor's office previously informed), among others for deprivation of liberty, violation of bodily integrity, insulting and slander of Gizela Jagielska's doctor at the Poviat Hospital Team in Oleśnica in April 2025.

Braun is also accused of public calling on the Internet “For hatred against the background of religious differences” and an insult to religious feelings “by giving an interview, made available on the YouTube platform, regarding the use of December 12, 2023 in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland to extinguish the chanu candle.”

In May, the European Parliament, while voting in Strasbourg, has already repealed Braun's immunity in another matter. It included, among others for an investigation into the extinguishing of chanucin candles in the Sejm, but also many other incidents. (PAP)
