Most of the people captured in the Gaza Strip are civilians, including Teachers, medical workers, officials, sick, elderly people and children – calculated the British newspaper, revealing the results of a journalistic investigation conducted in cooperation with two Israeli portals, +972 and Local Call.

The daily pointed out that the case concerns Palestinians qualified by Israel to the group of “illegal fighters”, i.e. people not recognized as both civilians and prisoners of war belonging to the regular armed forces.

This status allows them to be practically indefinite without being charged or trial. The law about “illegal fighters” was already criticized by organizations defending human rights, which pointed out its abuse. The number of detainees in this way increased after Hamas's attack on Israel of October 7, 2023 and the war started after it in the Gaza Strip. The provisions regarding their detention were also loosened.

In May, about 6,000 were imprisoned. people recognized as “illegal fighters”, but only 1,450 of these names also appeared in the database of over 47,000 in the Israeli military intelligence. Identified fighters of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic jihad – wrote “Guardian”.

The British daily and Israeli portals already referred to this secret list, informing that, according to the register, about 8,900 identified fighters were killed in the Gaza Strip. The media combined it with 53 thousand. all the fatalities of the war recorded until then by the local administration led by Hamas.

On this basis, it can be concluded that 83 percent Palestinians killed are civilians, and 17 percent Members of Hamas and other groups. The Israeli army commented that these calculations are incorrect and do not reflect the army. In January, the army reported that it killed about 20 thousand. members of terrorist organizations.

The document and relationship shows that “illegal fighters” included, among others 82 -year -old suffering from Alzheimer – said “Guardian”. According to a soldier cited by the SDE Teiman detention center, so many patients, disabled or older Palestinians were brought to him that they were placed in a separate hangar called “geriatric farm”.

Army statistics show that some detainees were released after their relationships with terrorism were not proven. However, the sources of “Guardian” inform, however, that the prisoners were being kept without legitimate grounds.
