Why are we writing about it?
A trade agreement with the block of South American countries Mercosur is to accept the College of EU commissioners on Wednesday. The decision of the European Commission will end the process of grinding the text of the agreement for nine months in legal terms and translating it into EU national languages. Then the agreement will be accepted by the Member States.
After the opposition of several countries led by France and Poland, the agreement is to enable the use of a security clause. “It would be launched if there were perturbations on the EU agricultural market. It is about such protection that would limit the import of e.g. sugar or poultry, if it began to threaten production, e.g. in Poland or France.” – writes RMF FM.
What did the government spokesman announce?
Government spokesman Adam Szłapka announced on Tuesday that Poland would vote against the contract. However, the opposition of Warsaw and Paris is not enough to block the contract – at least four member countries are needed to build the so -called blocking minority.
What does the agreement with Mercosure assume?
An agreement with Mercosur, an organization associating South American countries, is to endure trade barriers for European companies such as high duties; It also provides for simplification of business procedures with the EU and the abolition of technical regulations and norms differing from international standards.
However, the most controversial part of the contract is that it opens the EU market to agricultural products from Mercosur. At the same time, the import of some sensitive agricultural products, such as beef, ethanol, pork, honey, sugar and poultry, is to be limited.
