The United Kingdom announced on Monday that it will suspend the requests for the family meeting, received from registered refugees, in order to give the government to tighten the rules, which is the latest attempt to reduce the number of migrants arrived on the British territory, notes Reuters, according to Agerpres.
The government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under increasing pressure to reduce the number of asylum seekers who arrived in the United Kingdom coming from France aboard small boats.
British Interior Minister Yvette Cooper said in front of the parliamentarians that more and more refugees have asked to bring their family members, which increases the pressure on living spaces in the country.
Cooper added that he will suspend this system while the London government seeks to tighten the rules.
“The system must be controlled and managed on the basis of correct and properly consolidated rules, not by chaos and exploitation oriented by criminal gangs of traffickers,” she said.
Since the beginning of the year, just over 29,000 people have officially come to the United Kingdom aboard small boats, up 38% compared to the same period of 2024.
At the end of June, 32,059 asylum applicants were housed in over 200 hotels in the country. The British government promised to give up this type of asylum seekers, considered too expensive, in 2029.
