Ursula von der Leyen in Poland. Meeting with Donald Tusk on the border with Belarus


Donald Tusk and Ursula von der Leyen participated in the briefing with the commanding staff of the Border Guard and the Polish Army. It is these services that play a key role in securing the border, which for several years has been a place of hybrid activities and migration pressure inspired by Belarus and Russia.
KPRM informed that the topic of conversations in Krynki, in addition to defense and security, was also the Safe preferential loan program, which is to support the disposal of Europe. This initiative is a response to Russia's growing military potential and related threats to the security of the continent.
After the briefing, Prime Minister Tusk and chairwoman von der Leyen had the opportunity to watch the place of storage of elements for the construction of the “Targe East” – a project to strengthen the protection of the EU eastern border. Then they visited the modernized steel dam on the border.

On the 186-kilometer section of the border in the Podlasie Voivodeship, a 5.5 m high fence is erected, which is additionally supported by an electronic barrier. The latter covers 206 km, including river sections. In the Lublin region, the electronic barrier was built along the Bug River and is 171 km long. This infrastructure is crucial for protecting the border of both Poland and the European Union.
The visit of Ursula von der Leyen in Poland is an element of a wider series of meetings in the Member States of the European Union bordering Russia and Belarus. As part of this initiative, the chairwoman of the EC will visit seven countries: Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. The purpose of these visits is to strengthen cooperation in the field of security and defense in the face of growing geopolitical tensions.
