The Court of Appeal in Washington ruled on Friday with a votes of 7 to 4 that most duties imposed by the administration of Donald Trump are illegal. The decision mainly applies to the so -called “Mutual” duties introduced in April, as well as separate tariffs for goods from China, Canada and Mexico.

Although the decision does not cover duties on steel and aluminum, the court decided that the president had exceeded his competence when he referred to the Act on the international economic rights of the head of state in extraordinary situations of the 1970s.

According to most judges, this act does not give Trump the right to impose such far -reaching duties, and its provisions do not clearly provide for the possibility of entering taxes or trade tariffs.

The American leader defended his customs policy, claiming that rates range from 15 percent. for goods from the European Union up to 50 percent For imports from India, they are necessary to restore balance in global trade. In his opinion, the current trade system harms the interests of the United States.

Many economists warn that such a policy can harm American enterprises and consumers, leading to an increase in prices and inflation. Public radio (NPR) noticed that the effects of duties may only be felt after some time, and the tariffs themselves met with numerous lawsuits, including one filed by several states.

The Court of Appeal suspended the implementation of the decision by mid -October, giving administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court. The White House expressed the conviction that the Supreme Court would repeal this ruling.

Donald Trump reacted to the court's decision in an emotional entry on the Truth Social platform, warning that if the judgment stays in force, “it literally destroys the United States of America.”

In another post he expressed indignation towards judges, asking rhetorically:

“Where do these judges come from? How is it possible that they could cause such damage to the United States? Is it pure hatred of Trump?”

Trump also criticized the Federalist Society, an organization whose recommendations were due to some judicial nominations, accusing its chairman Leonard Leo “hatred of America” and “own ambitions”. In his opinion, the court's decision is not only a legal mistake, but a threat to the foundations of the American economy.
