Patients who have oncological disorders will benefit from settled psychological therapy, announces the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete. The measure was approved on Thursday by the Government, at the proposal of the Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance House.

“So far, cancer patients have been forced to lead a double struggle – with the disease and lack of access to psychological support. Today, Romania officially recognizes that the complete treatment of cancer does not only mean medicines, surgery or radiotherapy, but also emotional support,” says the Minister of Health.

“Psychological support is not a moft, but a vital part of the treatment. Studies show that patients who benefit from emotional support have a better adhesion to treatment, increased resilience and higher quality,” adds Alexandru Rogobete.

According to him, “cancer is a complex struggle, and the Romanian state assumes to be with patients – not only with medical treatments, but also with psychological support, so necessary.”

The new legislative framework sets:

  • Until June 30, 2026, oncological patients can benefit from psychological services settled at the recommendation of specialist doctors, even if psychologists do not have a training in psychooncology.
  • Starting with July 1, 2026, in order to increase the quality of services, psychological support will be granted only by psychologists with professional training in psycho -coology.

The Ministry of Health and the National House of Health Insurance also specify that, in the next period, they will collaborate with professional organizations and medical companies “for the rapid and coherent implementation of new measures”.

“Crucial” role

Psychological therapy plays a crucial role in supporting cancer patients, approaching emotional challenges, reducing anxiety and improving the general condition, according to the National Health System (NHS).

The diagnosis and treatment of cancer can cause significant emotional suffering, including anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress. Psychological therapy is essential to help patients cope with these feelings and improve the quality of their lives. Research indicates that early psychological interventions can have a positive impact on both mental and physical health for cancer patients, NHS specialists show.

In many countries in Europe – including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Holland, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Hungary – Psychological therapy is part of cancer treatment and is settled.
