Former Polish Minister of Health, Adam Niedzzieski, was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after being assaulted in the city of Siedlce, in the east of the country, in an incident that the authorities consider to be related to the elaboration of national policies during the Covid Pandema, Politico reports, according to News.ro.
“A few hours ago, I was the victim of a brutal attack,” Niedzzieski said after the incident.
“I was beaten by two men who shouted,” Death the traitors of the homeland! “I was hit in front and then hit with my feet as I lay down. The whole incident lasted a few seconds, after which the aggressors fled,” he said.
Police confirmed on Wednesday evening that two men aged about 30 were detained in connection with the incident. The suspects will be interrogated on Thursday. The authorities have promised that more details about the suspects and the circumstances of the attack will be made public after the interrogation is completed.
The aggression took place in front of a restaurant in the center of Siedlce, the police said. Witnesses reported that the aggressors began to be vocal, criticizing the decisions of the government during the Covid Pandemic period before physically attacking the former Minister of Health.
After aggression, Niedzzzieski was admitted for a short time at the provincial hospital in Siedlce and discharged the same day, without serious injuries.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned the attack on Wednesday evening, promising that the authors will be imprisoned. “Without mercy,” he asked.
Niedzzzieski, who led the Ministry of Health between 2020 and 2023, during the governance of PIS Conservatives, now in opposition, was a central figure in implementing restrictions and vaccination campaigns in Poland, which remain controversial among a part of the population.
Commenting on Wednesday's attack, Niedzielski said that this was “the result of tolerating the instigator speeches”, as well as the decision of the current Polish Interior Minister, Marcin Kierwiitski, a member of the Party of Prime Minister Tusk, to withdraw the protection, “despite the numerous threats” he had received before.
“I hope this situation will cause all the parts of the political scene to reflect that we are already on a slippery slope. Passivity will only condemn us to an even greater escalation,” said Niedzzieski.
