The Frenchman met the “king” on several friendly or charitable occasions. The last time in May 2024, at the gala party organized for the “Golden Generation”.
Then, Karembeu accepted the invitation although he was going through a family drama. Several his relatives were killed during the violence that took place in New Caledonia. “I am in mourning, which is why I have been silent lately. Two members of my family have been shot in the CAP by sniper,” said the former midfielder.

Karembeu refused to sing the anthem of France
Although he gathered 53 matches at the France's national team, Karembeu refused to sing the anthem before the parties.
The famous “La Marseillaise” is not regarded with good eyes by all the French, especially by those from the colonies, being associated with the violence of the French Revolution and seen as a symbol of conflicts than of unity.
“The history of France is that of its colonies and wealth. Above all, I am Kanak. I cannot sing the national anthem of France because I know the history of my people,” Karembeu would explain his controversial decision.
Many native Kanak in New Caledonia have died for France in World War I.
Karembeu and the great -grandfather “cannibal”
Moreover, his tribe was subjected to humiliating treatments at the 1931 colonial exhibition in Paris. The event, which attracted thousands of visitors, was meant to be a presentation of the glory acquired by France through its imperialist conquests.
In reality, however, it was an exhibition of racism and prejudices encouraged by the colonialist regime, as groups of people conquered by the French were put in the showcase in front of the crowd and presented as cannibals. The spectators were looking at how the “exhibits” were forced to eat raw meat and perform “wild” dances for their amusement.
Among them was Karembeu's great -grandfather, Willy, as the former footballer would later recognize.
And for the humility to be total, some of the “exposed” Kanaks would be sold to a zoos in Weimar, Germany, being changed on a few crocodiles.
Karembeu, Ambassador to Olympiacos
After retiring, in 2006, the former defensive midfielder worked as a Portsmouth and Arsenal Scouter, and since June 2013 he was co-opted at the staff of Olympiacos Pirau. Here he held several positions: sports director, consultant and ambassador.
He was present in the fall in Bucharest, at the match between FCSB and Olympiacos, score 0-0, played on November 28.

“The quality and refinement of Portuguese football have always been undeniable. Legends Charity Game is a fantastic opportunity to divide the field with some of the most emblematic players of Portugal and, more than that, everything is for a noble cause. With over 1 million euros to be collected for local and international organizations, I am so important. Again the laces from the football boots ”
