The director of Spanish civil protection said on Monday that the evolution is “slow”, but “favorable” on the fire front, which resulted in four dead and devastated 350,000 hectares on the territory of the country in about ten days, informs Agerpres.

“The reappresses (of fires, n.red) ask us many problems,” said Virginia Barcones on the occasion of a press conference.

A number of 14 fires were still active and ranked Monday at the operational level 2, which means they represent a danger to people and housing, compared to 21 last week. The winds will be “a little more intense” and the higher temperatures, but the forecasts indicate an improvement of the climate on Tuesday, which will help the firefighters delimit the fires, said Barcones, quoted by AFP.

Spanish firefighters, assisted by colleagues from other countries of the European Union, struggled without breaks for combating fires, who have leaned over 350,000 hectares over two weeks, according to the Forest Fire Information (EFFIS).

The most severe regions were Castilia and León, Extrumadura and Galicia, in the western and northwest of Spain, near the border with Portugal, a country in turn devastated in the last days of violent forest fires.

The fires intensified during a heat wave that lasted two weeks and increased the temperatures at values of over 40 degrees Celsius, respectively 45 degrees Celsius in certain places in the south of the country, the most intense value ever registered, according to the National Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Romanian firefighters stay until Thursday

The fire fighting teams from Finland and France will leave Spain from Tuesday, followed by German teams, while Romanian teams will leave on Thursday, said Virginia Barcones.

The Romanian firefighters have been acting for four days with Spanish firefighters to extinguish the vegetation fires that have affected entire communities in the Kingdom of Spain. Currently, 51 Romanian firefighters are in Spain to support the local authorities in the efforts to limit and eliminate the effects produced by dry vegetation fires.

According to a statement of the Department for Emergency Situations, during the day of Monday the national module specialized in the extinguishing of forest fires acts in the north of the Ourense region.

The intervention forces act under the direct coordination of the Spanish authorities, having as main objective the limitation of the expansion and extinguishing the active outbreaks. The risk index for Monday is at level 3 (high), and the field conditions are difficult, DSU said. The high temperatures, the low humidity and the wind make it difficult for the firefighters.

In parallel, the staff of the module acts for the release and security of access roads, by release the dense vegetation from the outbreaks, thus facilitating the access of the Spanish intervention vehicles and creating safety color.
