Romania sent 4,000 sheep to Algeria by plane: “They arrive at their destination in just two and a half hours”

Romania delivered over 4,000 sheep to Algeria by cargo planes, for the first time through this mode of transport, announced the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA).

They arrived safely in Algeria in just two and a half hours, and three more shipments are scheduled in the coming period, according to a press release.

“Algeria has decided that the entire requirement for the year 2026, including the Eid el-Adha celebration, will be provided exclusively from Romania. The excellent quality of sheep meat from Romania further strengthens the strong collaboration between the two states”, states ANSVSA.

According to the president of the institution, Alexandru Bociu, the use of cargo flights to import sheep from Romania places the quality of Romanian meat in a super-premium segment.

“I emphasize and appreciate the crucial progress in terms of logistical efficiency and safety for animals that accompany this type of transport. The sheep reach their destination in just two and a half hours, as opposed to a maritime transport that can take up to 8 days. In other words, we have a clear confirmation of the trust we have gained in a new market that we opened last year”, said Bociu.

The first export of sheep to Algeria took place last year, and in the last 30 days, more than 600,000 sheep were exported to Algeria, all transported under strict safety conditions, on board several specially authorized ships, according to the Authority.
