Russia challenges Polish producers. Exports grow at a dizzying pace


According to the weekly-rolniczy.pl website, data for the first half of 2025 show that Russia exported about 14 thousand. tons of cheese and cottage cheese with a total value of over PLN 250 million. The largest increases were recorded among cheese (by 33 %).

Not only post -Soviet countries. Export to China, Zea or Turkey
Post -Soviet countries such as Kazakhstan or Belarus remain the main recipients of Russian dairy products. The country, however, is more and more boldly entering more distant markets, such as Mongolia, China, the United Arab Emirates, Serbia and Türkiye. Experts predict that by 2030 the value of Russian cheese exports can reach up to PLN 700 million.

Poland is still higher in the rankings, but the competition is getting worse
Poland, as one of the largest cheese manufacturers, exported products worth almost PLN 3 billion in 2024. It places our country in fifth place in the world, behind the United States, Germany, France and Italy. However, the growing competition from Russia can affect the dynamics of the export of Polish products, especially the markets of Asia and the Middle East.

Investments drive development
Russian success in the dairy industry is the result of many years of investments and modernization. Since 2012, the equivalent of PLN 4.5 billion has been invested in the dairy sector, of which most of which went to industry in 2018-2022. Thanks to this, the production of cheese in Russia increased from 800 thousand. tons in 2020 up to over a million tons in 2024. This allowed the federation to enter the top tens of the largest producers in the world. It focuses on the export of semi -hard and hard cheese, which are very popular in the HoReCa sector. It also develops whey processing, which opens new possibilities on Chinese and African markets.
