Prime Minister Francois Bayrou announced on Monday that he would ask the parliament about the vote of confidence on September 8. Extreme left -wing France, unwashed (LFI) and the extreme right -wing National Union (RN) announced that they would not give the government a vote of confidence.

“I asked the president (Emmanuel Macron) to convene an extraordinary parliament session, at which the government will be held responsible,” said Bayrou. The Prime Minister will appeal to Article 49.1 of the French Constitution, which says that the prime minister is asking the National Assembly to grant the government a vote of confidence in connection with the government program or possibly in connection with the declaration regarding general policy.
If the government does not get a vote of trust, the Bayrou office will fall. The Prime Minister argued, however, that “sometimes in life, only thoughtful risks avoids something worse.” Bayrou informed about the intention to turn to the Parliament at a press conference devoted to how to fight public debt and the need for budget cuts.
The prime minister announced that he would first seek the trust of parliamentarians to agree on “on the seriousness of the situation” (regarding state finances – PAP), and later organize a debate on savings activities in the draft budget for 2026. The prime minister assured that all these activities – which he presented in July this year. – They can be a topic of discussion, including an unpopular proposal to delete two days off.
In the first part of the speech, the head of government warned that due to the growing public debt, the sovereignty and independence of the country were threatened and that France was in a “disturbing and decisive” moment. In mid -July, the Prime Minister proposed savings activities that would allow the budget for next year to find savings of EUR 44 billion. The opposition objected and demanded a change in this project. It was expected that the opposition parties at the earliest in autumn, and at the latest during the budget, would report a vote of no confidence in the government. LFI announced such a step.

After the announcement of a vote of trust, one of the main LFI politicians, Manuel Bompard announced on social networks that the deputies of LFI would “vote on September 8 for the government to fall.” The head of the extreme right Marine Le Pen also wrote on the website X that the RN will “vote against the vote of trust”. (https://tinyurl.com/tpadczye). Le Pen was in favor of resolving the National Assembly, which would mean new parliamentary elections.
A group of right -wing MPs led by Eric Ciotti also intends to vote against the government, and on the left – the communist party of France (PCF). 287 votes are necessary until the government dismissed. According to the counting of the number of places in parliament, the government could fall if the socialist party joined the votes of the extreme left, ecologists, PCF and the extreme right.
Socialists will not support a vote of confidence in the Bayrou government – this may determine his fall
The head of the French Socialist Party (PS) Olivier Faure said on Monday that “you can't imagine” that this party would vote on September 8 in parliament for a vote of trust for the government of Prime Minister Francois Bayrou. Earlier, other parts of the opposition announced voting against the government.
“You can't imagine socialists vote for a vote of trust for Francois Bayrou,” said Faure in an interview with the daily Le Monde. In his opinion, the head of government “decided to leave”.
287 votes are necessary until the government dismissed. The arrangement of power in parliament is very unfavorable for Bayrou: Centric parties supporting his government have only 210 seats together. Opposition parties (extreme right and extreme left, both with their allies), which have already announced voting against the vote of trust, have 264 places in parliament. For this reason, the position of the socialist party, which has 66 deputies, was considered decisive.
In an interview with “Le Monde” Faure assured that his party “does not want chaos.” – It is Francois Bayrou who is responsible for political instability, presenting a budget that no one supports, even his electorate. The prime minister does not want to see that the debt crisis has not been related to expenses stable for many years, and the loss of income due to tax presents. We do not want chaos but justice – said the head of PS.
