The cheapest electricity supplier says that it is possible to increase the rates / “own production is no longer sufficient for all contracts”

Hidroelectrica says that it can no longer honor its energy supply contracts to domestic customers only from their own production, as a result of the large number of consumers who have been in its portfolio in recent months. This can lead to the increase of the supply price in the future, the company says.

• Hidroelectrica had, at the end of June, 768,836 household and non-casual customers. In the first six months of this year, the supplier attracted over 177,000 new customers.

The information was initially published on the Facebook group Customer Hidroelectrica, where the administrator posted the answers received from Hidroelectrica, following the requests from consumers.

The company has confirmed, for HotNews.ro, the veracity of the answers.

One of the questions refers to a statement from May of an official Hidroelectrica, according to which the company cannot take over all household customers in Romania.

“Hidroelectrica cannot and does not want to take over all domestic customers in Romania, for the simple reason that the energy needs of domestic consumers exceeds the production capacity of the company. In addition, Hidroelectrica owns significant electricity supply contracts to non-casual customers, some of the largest consumers in Romania. Consumption of each client ”, the officials of the energy company replied.

The company, which has the lowest rates on the energy market, says it has a “correct” offer for its customers and does not plan to provide a “less attractive” one.

But, “in the context of the accelerated growth of demand from domestic consumers, Hidroelectrica can be found starting with May 2025 in the position to purchase some of the required amount of electricity to cover the needs of household customers. This energy can have a higher price than that of their own production (hydro), which could influence the price,”

According to the legislation in force, energy suppliers can change even the prices in the ongoing contracts, if there are no other clauses, with the mention that they must notify their customers at least 30 days before. If it does not accept the price change, customers can unilaterally denounce the contracts.

Hidroelectrica said, in June, that it may take over all requests to conclude new contracts

The company had said, in a statement from June, that “the retrieval of new customers takes place without limitations”.

“In the context of the concerns recently published in the public space, Hidroelectrica wants to provide assurances that there are no limit number of customers that the company can take over during this period,” the company representatives said.

They gave assurances that the supplier “has the operational and logistics capacity necessary to effectively manage all the requests for the conclusion of the electricity supply contracts, regardless of the volume of applications”.

Currently, Hidroelectrica is the cheapest energy supplier in the market, with a price of 1.04 – 1.1 lei/kWh, depending on the distribution area.

Over 177,000 consumers ported to Hidroelectrica in the first half of this year

The financial report of the company for the first half of the year shows that, from January 1 to June 30, Hidroelectrica has attracted over 177,000 new customers.

“On June 30, 2025, the supply portfolio included 768,836 consumer places (LC), registering an increase of 30% compared to the same date of the previous year, when 590,898 LC were registered. This increase of 177,938 LC reflects both to attract a significant number of new household customers, as well company representatives.

The evolution was supported by the announcement regarding the elimination of the caption of energy prices starting July 1, 2025, which has determined an increased interest in changing the supplier before the expiration of the prices ceiling, Hidroelectrica says.

Hydroelectric's energy production decreased by 27% in the first half of 2025

On the other hand, the net profit of Hidroelectrica decreased in the first semester by 41% compared to the same period last year, to 1.587 billion lei, mainly due to the reduced electricity production.

Thus, Hidroelectrica had to buy electricity from the market, more expensive, to honor her contracts.

“The difficult operational context, marked by unfavorable hydrological conditions, has led to a 27% decrease in the net electricity production compared to the same period of the previous year. The recovery from the second quarter 2025 has mainly based on the market energy acquisition,” the company report shows.
