Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski announced on Thursday that he was waiting to receive in 7-10 days from his Western allies the general lines of security guarantees they are willing to offer to Ukraine, after which he will try to get a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to negotiate the war.

In a statement granted to a group of journalists, Zelenski stressed that he wants to understand the “architecture of Western security” for Ukraine.

After meetings on Monday at the White House with US President Donald Trump, attended by European leaders, Zelenski said that in about ten days his country's allies will put on paper the form that the security guarantees could take. He has now confirmed this waiting horizon, mentioning 7-10 days, notes Agerpres.

Then, after Kiev will be received this sketch of security guarantees, “we should have a bilateral meeting in a week or two” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as Trump wants, the leader from Kiev continued.

Later, Zelenski, according to the results of this bilateral meeting, indicated, the US president could attend a trilateral meeting (Trump-Putin-Zenski).

Requirements placed by Putin

The diplomatic contacts accelerated with the summit that Putin and Trump had on Friday in Alaska, where the Russian president would have presented his peace conditions and compromises to which he would be ordered.

The Kremlin leader would have asked Ukraine to completely retreat from the Donbas region (made up of Donetk and Luhansk provinces) and instead of freezing the rest of the front line, but would have become more flexible than the idea of security guarantees offered by Ukraine by Western states, including the US, but outside NATO.

However, Zelenski refuses any territorial transfer, and his European supporters, especially French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, insist on being sent European troops to Ukraine as a security guarantee for it, despite the Russian opposition.

Conditions for a Putin-Zenski meeting announced by Lavrov

The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, pointed out that a meeting between Putin and Zelenski first requires in-depth discussions that outline solutions to the main divergent issues and reproached the European leaders to undermine the progress obtained at the Russian-American summit in Alaska, especially through their insistence in Ukraine “Unacceptable” for Russia, which warns that any discussion about Western security guarantees for Ukraine that does not take into account the position of Moscow will not lead anywhere.

From the point of view of Moscow, explained Lavrov, the security guarantees for Ukraine must be considered starting from the discussions on this topic that took place between Russia and Ukraine in 2022 in Istanbul, where the request to Kiev de Moscow was to accept a status of neutrality in exchange for the security guarantees offered by the USA Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France.

The West explores the Security Guarantee options

The US military manager and several European states have already developed a number of military options on future security guarantees for Ukraine and they will be presented to national security counselors in the respective countries, in order to examine them in the diplomatic efforts for the conclusion of the Russian-Ukrainian war, an American official said on Thursday.

He said that meetings between the US defense officials, Ukraine, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Finland have been held on Tuesday in Washington.

Ukraine and its European allies are encouraged by Trump's promise to involve the US along with Europeans in security guarantees for Ukraine, but many questions remain.

Some officials warn that American and European military planners will need time to determine what options may be acceptable to Russia from a political and military point of view.

An idea advanced by a manager would be the conduct of European troops in Ukraine under the command and control of US, but this does not take into account the position of Russia to reject any foreign troops on the Ukrainian territory.
