“From January 1, 2026, excise stakes for ethyl alcohol, beer, wine, fermented drinks and indirect products by 15 percent will increase. In relation to the rates from 2025, from January 1, 2027, excise duty rates for these products will increase by 10 percent.” – explained the Ministry of Finance in a statement. It added that this is a reaction to” the need to counteract the harmful influence of alcohol on the health of Poles. “
The ministry also announced an increase in the sugar fee. “The limitation of the economic availability of sweetened drinks is associated with an increasing problem of obesity and spending more funds on health protection in this area,” the Ministry of Finance explained.
“The current amount of sugar fee was adopted in 2020 and significantly differs from current prices of drinks. Thus, the amount of the fee is insufficient to affect consumers' behavior. At the same time, more and more drinks are not charged with sugar fees at all, due to the addition of juice used to avoid the fee” – it was written.
As stated, updating the amount of sugar fee, including caffeine or taurine fees, which include in energy drinks, provides for an increase in the amount of the fee: a fixed for sugar content up to 5 GW of 100 ml of the drink or for the content of the sweetener (so -called sweeteners): from PLN 0.50 to PLN 0.70, a variable for each gram of sugars above 5 GW 100 ml drink: from PLN 0.05 to PLN 0.10, for caffeine or taurine, from PLN 0.10 to PLN 1.00, Maximum: from PLN 1.20 to PLN 1.80 – per 1 liter of drink.
“The purpose of the procedure of the Public Health Act is also to simplify the sugar fee system, including by transferring the obligation to pay the fee to the beginning of the supply chain. The project also provides for clarification of the rules for calculating and charging the due fee,” the ministry said.
