UEFA rejected Barcelona's request to start their campaign in the Champions League with a traveling match. The Catalans contacted the European forum in mid -July, asking to avoid the dispute of their first European match on their own field due to the renovation works at Camp Nou.

UEFA has argued that such requests have never been accepted in the past, according to Sportal.bg.

UEFA rejected Barcelona's request to play the first match of the Champions League

This means that Barcelona will have to wait until August 28, when the group phase will take place, to find out if the luck is on their side.

If the draw will give Barcelona a traveling match, Hansi Flick's students will start their campaign on foreign ground between September 16 and 18, and their European debut on “Camp Nou” will take place on September 30 or October 1.

An important detail is that UEFA forces the clubs to play on the same stadium throughout the entire main phase of the competition – meaning Barça cannot start on one stadium and then move to another.

Meanwhile, La Liga has accepted the champions desire to play on the first three stages of the new season of the first Spanish league, giving them time to continue the works on “Camp Nou”.

The renovation process is not yet completed, two of the stands still not fulfilling the necessary standards.

The club makes considerable efforts to reopen the stadium within the so-called “first phase” of the construction works, which would allow them to bring the supporters back as soon as possible. The reality is, however, that the chances of this occur in time remain small.

If the necessary authorizations are not obtained quickly, the first home match of the championship Barça – against Valencia, on September 14 – could be played with closed gates, a scenario that the club is desperately trying to avoid.
