Merz announces when Putin and Zelenski will meet

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised US President Donald Trump because he convinced the Russian leader to accept a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Reuters reported.

This meeting, to which Vladimir Putin agreed during a telephone call with Trump, will take place in a place to be established, the German Chancellor said.
“We do not know if the Russian president will have the courage to participate in such a summit. There is a need for persuasion,” said Merz, who was part of the delegation of European leaders who went to Washington on Monday to give you Ukrainian president Volodimir Zelenski.
During a break of the meeting, “the US president spoke on the phone with the Russian president and agreed that a meeting will take place between Russian president and Ukrainian president in the next two weeks,” Merz told reporters at a press conference.
Also, Trump has agreed to launch a new invitation for a tripartite meeting afterwards, so that negotiations could “start truly,” Merz added.
The German Chancellor said Trump was impressed by the fact that Europeans came as a united front, and their discussions with the US administration will now focus on the details of security guarantees for Ukraine.
“It is absolutely clear that the whole of Europe should participate,” Merz said, praising Trump's announcement that the United States are also prepared to provide these guarantees.
