President Nicușor Dan said, in an interview for Antena 1, that he wants the future directors that he will designate at the Romanian Intelligence Service and the Intelligence Service to be “people in society”, not from the political environment. The president avoided giving name by saying that he will not do so until he has the certainty that the coalition parties will accept his proposals.
Nicușor Dan said he cannot comment on the names conveyed for the head of information services until he will certainly be that his proposals will go through the Parliament's vote.
“It is a sensitive discussion in which the president proposes, the Parliament approves or not. Romania needs stability, we are not in the situation where I can make a proposal, the Parliament to reject it, and I to accuse them and them. These discussions take place in a restricted framework, away from the press and when we will announce it.”
On the other hand, he admitted that the subject was discussed with representatives of the coalition parties. “A very collegial discussion, without any tension,” said Nicușor Dan.
Invited to create a profile of the heads of services they would like, the president detailed: “Some people who have life experience, be able to coordinate many people and have a political ability to move between various interests, many legitimate.”
What are the names conveyed
Nicușor Dan has not yet appointed the heads of intelligence services. The latest name taken into account for SRI is lawyer Gabriel Zbârcea, according to G4media, and for Sie Marius Lazurca, according to Euronews.
Other names conveyed for the head of the SRI are Florin Vlădă, the head of the Office Integrated Information in Cotroceni, and Mircea Abrudean, the president of the Senate, supported by PNL.
The teacher and expert in international relations Valentin Naumescu, about whom several publications have written in recent days that it would be a variant taken into account for the head of the SRI, said that no one has spoken to it on this topic and is not interested in running the service.
In June, President Nicușor Dan said in a press conference that a civil director at SRI is needed and that “a new SIE director is very likely.” Currently, the SRI has no civil director, and SIE is led by Gabriel Vlase.
In another press conference, from July 30, Nicușor Dan said that he has “three, four names” in mind for the head of the SRI. At the same time, he said he would name the heads of the services “in the coming weeks”.
SRI was left without director in 2023, after Eduard Hellvig, announced his resignation. He has held this position for eight years, since 2015. At the SIE leadership is, since 2018, Gabriel Vlase, former PSD deputy.
